On the Road Again...

Have you ever taken your children on a road trip?
I mean a LOOOOOONG road trip,1,100 miles from home.
We did, and it was way better than I anticipated. Check out the Details.

Although I was virtually terrified about the trip, I continually re-assured my husband everything would be perfect and the children would transition smoothly from our normal airline trips to this driving adventure to Florida.

The trip itself began super smoothly indeed! The car was packed and children in their seats comfortably snacking just after lunchtime, nearly exactly when we had planned on leaving.

The drive was virtually uneventful, the children slept (afternoon nap time), until we arrived in the Carolinas', where we were able to stop for dinner at Outback (using a gift card that was about 10 years old - yay for CT for not letting them expire). After a quick stretch and a change into pajamas (just for the children ;) and back on the road again.

A few more stops for gas, bathroom and stretches and we reached Florida! The children did SO well! They did not utter the dreaded "Are we there yet", until roughly 30 minutes from the Hotel! Then it was off the the EXPO, and a much needed shower and dinner!

Yay for awesome kids!

Are you thinking of taking a trip?

Here are some MUSTS:

1. Start talking about the “adventure.” It was going to be fun and exciting, and I wanted the kids to be just as excited as I was.
2. Load up on books and other media! Grab a handful of books and DVDs new to you, and separate them into two bags, one for the way there and one for the way back.
3. A good list is a must. As a mom I never leave home without a container of baby wipes and an extra change of clothes for my little ones.
4. Pack “surprises” for your tiny travelers. The dollar store is my go-to for this! I grabbed cute reusable bags, and filled them with coloring books, crayons, books, stickers, tattoos and snacks.
5. Make stops! This is the biggest non-negotiable! Believe me, I would have loved my 22 hour drive to have only been 18 , but I realized that this was my children’s first long road trip. So, we stopped at every time we went below a-half-a-tank, filled up, used the restrooms and did a good-old-fashioned stretch.
6. Talk with your kids! Lets face it, kids won't sit quietly in a car. We sang, chatted and viewed all sorts of things we passed.
7. Pack snacks. All sorts of favorite things, especially those that they have not had in awhile.
8. Make mess stoppers! I have a brand new vehicle and I don't like messes, but we are driving... for 20 hours.... with three kids. I made trays for them to hold their snacks, AND allow them to have a flat surface for reading and drawing.

I have THE BEST pants!

Fairly recently I had the distinct pleasure of trying out a pair of kick butt Capri work-out pants from GHSports I can HONESTLY say, they are the BEST I have ever worn, EVER! Sadly I only own one pair of these bad boys (right now anyway). I wore them to run 10ks, I wore them to boot camp, I wore them to Cross-fit, and I p90x-ed the HECK out of them. they have been worn, washed a re-worn well OVER  dozen times and STILL fit exactly the same as the first time I wore them! PERFECTION!

GH Women's 3/4 Zipper Capri On a more "girl" note, they are cute too! And they have an awesome rear pocket that is "hidden" but can comfortably (seriously), fit an id, a credit card and one of those handy mini-tampons. They are lightweight, breathable, but don't feel like your soaking in sweat, when your soaking in sweat..
If you DON'T believe me, then your dumb... seriously, try them! The customer service ROCKS too, so no worries, this WHOLE company... winner!

My BABY's First 5k

Today we took off to the Orange County Choppers 5K. Our expectation was to bring ALL the kids., but the weather wasn't allowing for it... so 1/3 were left at home, while 2/3 remained with the "grown folk" to face the weather AND run a race.
I am proud to say, my eldest son successfully ran his first 5k.... PLACING in his age group!

Earlier in the week his doctor told us he has moderate to severe asthma and seasonal allergies and we had doubts about letting him run. But he wanted to go and was looking forward to it, so we took the chance.

When we got to OCC, we had about half an hour to burn, so we checked out a couple of the awesome OCC bikes, then headed outside for the race to kick off.

After we got him some water, snacks and grabbed a bite to eat in the cafe.

Come to find out, both my guys ended up placing third in their age groups!

So You Think You Can Run?

While running today I was thinking (shocking I know) about the things that make a person a runner.
I am super excited to join the realm of the runners.
In fact, JUST last week, I lost my first toenail!
That's not the only thing that helps me stand out as a runner, all my shorts and skirts have pockets, I have running sneakers, racing sneakers, treadmill sneakers and regular sneakers and I think 50 degrees and cloudy is perfect weather - even when the rain spits!
I realized that every time I see an exit sign now, like the 3 miles until blah-blah-blah-blah, I think to myself, I can run that! --- And sometimes I even calculate my time...
The phrase "It's all downhill from here", clearly bring a smile to my face.
I used to be a person who would do anything to avoid running, (I worked out, but cardio-free was for me)... and now, I know the mileage from my door in every direction, my day is "off" until I run, and I do anything to squeeze in a run.
First and foremost, I know I am a runner because of how it makes me feel... when I am sad, I run, when I am happy, I run and when I am angry, I run faster

Becoming a Runner

That's right, I have retreated into nearly 'liking' the run.
I guess when you are "Mrs. #TeamRunDisney", the options are limited... Put Up, Shut Up & Sign Up.
And so I did.
Now, I am facing a vast array of new issues... My body parts are taking turns aching... I thank them for that. Every ounce of food that enters my mouth, is followed by the 'will this fuel my next run' thoughts... And most importantly, the 'do we take them or search for a sitter dilemna'..
I have run with my kids, I actually have only done TWO races without one strapped to my chest and two being pushed in a jogger. THAT is NOT EASY.
I did not expect the overwhelming need to find the next race 'high' to kick in SO QUICKLY.... Nor, did I expect mysel to feel so driven to WANT to get better, faster and further runs in...
UGH...
I have become "one of them"....

I have immersed myself.
The fastest way to learn ANYTHING is through TOTAL immersion. A running immersion works similarly. Of course, taking on too much running too quickly can lead to fatigue and injury, but if done right, a running immersion can help build your aerobic base into your week and train you to run while fatigued. Because, let's face the facts here... VERY few finish a race of any length without some fatigue.
I am adding mileage to your weekly running diet, with caution and certainly slowly. I have recently decided to add 15-30 minutes a day to a morning run AND throw in a nice mile in the evening but I am making sure I am still taking at least one or two days off from running so I don’t literally run myself into the ground. I like to replace those days with some nice relaxing P90X/INSANITY Hybrid activities...At the end of the week, I've built ample muscle and burned baby fat.

I am still trying to figure out what works for me... Most say to find a comfortable pace, or dive into the 'Run-Walk' method... Which has been working for me, however on shorter runs I always try to break the mold a little and attempt doing more fartlek workouts and vary the length of my hard efforts, run hard without looking at my iphone. Hard to the next stoplight, run hard to the next tree or run hard until I think it’s time to back off for a rest interval.

I run hills.
I love it... when I am done. Hill workouts can put some pizzazz in my runs, and I can already tell (in the THREE weeks I have taken running seriously) they can go a long way in building dynamic muscle strength that can come in handy when I'm fatigued and struggling to finish the last miles of the race, AND it makes the small-ish inclines in road races, a piece of cake!

Now, I want to be fast.
I have spoken to runners, trainers, fitness nuts and physicians.... I want to be fast THE RIGHT WAY. It's funny to say that they all have come back to me with the SAME information.. To run fast, you have to train fast.
Now, I am setting asside a day a week to "speed train" myself. I run as fast as I can for 3 minutes, then lower the speed (still a run) for 2 minutes and repeat for a half an hour. I, the queen of "no sweat" am a sweaty mess at the end.
